Hand Finishes Chart

Number Name Type Description Material
Honed Machine Smooth, but no sheen. Specify degree of honing 00-100 All types of stone
Polished Machine Least porous finish, seals surface; produces high gloss and reflection; smooth as glass Granites, Marbles, Limestone, and select Sandstones
Lychee Hand Hand or machine bush-hammered; produced with multi-point hammer; non-directional textured finish that resembles a lychee fruit skin; very consistent, even surface; excellent co-efficient of friction Granites, Limestones, and Sandstones; holds and shows finish exceptionally well in Limestone; enhances overall depth and richness of many Sandstones
Adze Hand Hand finished adze - directional finish; produced with hammer-like axe; can be fine with almost parallel lines or rough directional lined pattern; pattern can be - heavy/deep or light/shallow Granites, Limestones, and Sandstones; holds and shows finish exceptionally well in limestone
Cleft Hand Natural cleft or stone face finish; split along natural fault line; no tooling or chisel marks Granites, Limestones, Sandstones, slate and quartzite
Split-Face Hand Natural cleft and then hammered to create a more even, but more textured finished face. For many stones, percussive hammer marks blend into split-face texture. Granites, Limestones, Sandstones, and quartzite; used predominantly on granite
Mushroom Hand Natural cleft and then chiseled up from the edges of each piece to create a raised center; few or no chisel marks; in profile it resembles a mushroom; the thickness at the edges is called the arris; both the arris and max face thickness should be specified Granites, Limestones, Sandstones, and quartzite; used predominantly on granite
Thermal Machine / Hand Flame finished by applying torch heat - surface of stone spalls off to leave a textured, natural looking, and fairly uniform face; some stones contain minerals that change color when flame is applied Granites, quartzites and some Limestones
Corduroy Hand Heavy hand-chiseling in parallel lines across face; can stop the pattern before reaching the edge of each piece to avoid spalling/breaking the edge; can be applied over hand-gauged or sawn face Granites, Limestones, and Sandstones
Pineapple Hand Rougher finish resembles a pineapple skin; produced by hammer and chisel in a rough, but fairly regular pattern of short, angled chisel marks across the face; although technically a directional finish, its rough texture can make the direction difficult to perceive; rough-pineapple can be specified non-directional as well; can be applied over hand-gauged or sawn face Granites, Limestones, and Sandstones
