Sustainable Products and Business Practices
At Yellow Mountain StoneWorks, we are proud of the ways we promote sustainability:
- Transporting our products via ocean shipping from China, resulting in a lower carbon footprint for our granite than comparable domestic products. See for yourself with our [Carbon Footprint Calculator].
- Reclaiming pre-Ming Dynasty hand-finished limestone for use in new projects. The reclaimed stone is from a structure destroyed in a flood over 650 years ago, which lay buried in a tributary of the Yangzi River. [Read more about our Reclaimed Limestone]
- Recycling project leftovers into affordable, modular pavers in standard sizes, to offer a sustainable alternative to concrete for mixed use/commercial and landscape paving. This not only recycles a valuable resource, it saves our customers money [Stone beats Concrete].
- Actively helping contractors and landscape architects qualify for LEED projects by providing clear data on the environmental impact of our products and processes. LEED certification is part of a nationally recognized program established by the U.S. Green Building Council. We have provided stone for LEED-certified Taylor 28 and Puyallup City Hall.
- Assessing the environmental and safety practices of our stone fabricators in China, using EPA and OSHA guidelines as a benchmark. Since completing the assessment in 2008, we are working with our fabricators to:
- Replace Styrofoam packing products with natural twine.
- Install water recycling systems to improve quarry run-off.
- Use limestone and granite dust as agricultural soil amendments.
- Promote use of safety equipment. Possibilities include shipping goggles and respirator masks to China and paying cash incentives to fabricators and employees to use them.
